The Environmental Studies major is a broad, interdisciplinary program designed for students interested in the scientific, social, political, economic and expressive aspects of global environmental issues. Awareness of the intersections between these issues are more apparent now than ever, particularly regarding the threat of climate change and how it affects not just the environment, but our economy, society, politics and daily lives. This program will prepare students for professional opportunities within the various dimensions of global environmental issues, and how these issues are managed, communicated and improved upon.

A bachelor of science, bachelor of arts, minor in environmental studies and minor in sustainability are offered within this program.

The B.S. in Environmental Studies is ideal for students wishing to specialize in a major concentration. Curriculum for these students will focus on one of four concentrations:

  • Communication
  • Humanity and Geography
  • Natural Sciences
  • Public Policy

The B.A. in Environmental Studies curriculum covers all major content areas listed above without specialization. A Minor in Environmental Studies is also offered to complement other degrees, and a Minor in Sustainability is offered to provide perspective on the long-term viability of environmental, social and economic systems.

UT's program is unique in the Florida market in that it is the only environmental studies degree program in the state with multiple degree options, multiple concentrations within those degrees and a focus on experiential environmental education through internships and capstone experiences. Interdisciplinary student teams work together through the capstone experience to find solutions to real-world environmental issues faced by University partners from the Tampa Bay community.

UT’s environmental studies program is led by Dan Huber, Ph.D., professor of environmental studies. For questions about this program, Huber can be reached at dhuber@ut.edu or (813) 257-3995.

The environmental studies major has allowed me to combine my passion for the environment and policy, both inside and outside of the classroom. I loved that the professors are dedicated to making sure students are successful.
